The original image was a standard record shot of a duck

The magic came by converting to B&W, initially this was to
accentuate the textures and remove the colours distracting from the detail. Conversion was done in the SilverEfex plugin in Photoshop.

Playing with a square crop I noticed the external
nare “nostril” looked like an eye.
By coming in tight on the beak and rotating the crop
to create the desired composition,
the image has become an intriguing illusion.
